  • What is Cosplay?

Cosplay has a couple of meanings, but the most relevant is the merging of the words ‘costume’ and ‘play’. If you want to wear a costume while attending an event (perhaps to compete or to perform a short sketch), then you have arrived in the exciting world of cosplay.

Cosplay is the combination of the English words "costume" and "play". It is a Japanese subculture centred on dressing as characters from manga, anime, and video games. However, in some circles, "cosplay" has been expanded to mean simply wearing a costume.

One anecdote about the origin of the word "cosplay" was that Nov Takahashi (from a Japanese studio called Studio Hard) coined the term "cosplay" as a contraction of the English words "costume play" while he was attending the 1984 Los Angeles Science Fiction Worldcon. He was so impressed by the hall and masquerade costuming there that he reported about it frequently in Japanese science fiction magazines. This ultimately triggered Japanese cosplay.

Cosplay is a hobby where like-minded people gather to see other costumes, show off their own elaborate handmade creations, snap lots of pictures and perhaps partake in best costume contests.

    Cosplay

In the United States and Europe, it differs from Japanese culture in that cosplay concerning Sci-Fi films and TV shows along with Renaissance-era characters and historical re-enactments, especially at science fiction conventions, are far more popular in the West than they are in Japan.

Cosplay is a favourite habit of Comic Con attendees, which fans attend in droves. There, you will see dozens of Batmen, Iron Men and Wonder Women, in addition to niche costumes, like characters of the Japanese manga series "Attack on Titan" and '90s throwbacks like Freakazoid and Hey Arnold.

    Brave Cosplay

The costumes vary greatly in intensity. Some crafty cosplayers get imaginative and repurpose clothing and props they already own. For example, to cosplay as Katniss Everdeen of "Hunger Games”, you only need a black t-shirt, green cargo pants, lace-up boots and hair tied into a braid. You can buy a Mockingjay pin replica and use brown eye shadow for dirt and grime smears.

    Katniss Cosplay

For cosplayers, the experience is nearly always worth the stress of choosing a costume and dropping the dough. It's an opportunity to be a hero, princess, or otherworldly creature. It takes courage to put on a costume and go into public. But cosplayers enjoy celebrating the characters that they love and embracing their fandom.

    Have you cosplayed yet?

  • The Batsuit From Batman Movie

It’s nearly time for the ‘Batman vs. Superman’ movie to begin filming, which means soon, the new costumes will be revealed. But what should we expect of Batman’s new suit? Will it be an upgrade from the previous movies or reminiscent to the DC’s comic books?

The costume designer Michael Wilkinson explains that there is ‘logic’ behind Ben Affleck’s new Batman suit:

“Zack Snyder has such a great vision for this film, the cinematic universe that we're creating together with the production designer and the cinematographer. It has a logic to it. It's very tight. It's a very gritty, real, contemporary world. That's what I had in the back of my mind when I tried to think of a Batman that works for that universe."

Until the Big Reveal, we will have to make the most of the Batsuit we already have…

  • 7 Batman costumes you can buy

A DC Comics superhero, Batman has been popular with comic book fans and cinephiles alike for decades. Along with Superman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman and Iron Man, many people dress as Batman every year. A Caped Crusader costume can be worn at both a Halloween and New Year’s Eve party. As well as Batman Costumes, his enemies are also a source of inspiration. So, what costumes can someone wear?

    1960’s Batman

A TV series, and also a movie, was released in the 1960’s that starred Adam West as Batman. The costume which he wore is largely purple and grey. As this TV series is still incredibly popular, choosing this costume is what many people decide to do.

    Christopher Nolan’s Batman

The batman costumes which Christian Bale wore in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy is completely different than what Adam West wore. It is entirely black and looks very menacing. Although a plastic suit can be worn, a cloth design could also be stocked by a fancy dress supplier.

    The Joker

Played by Cesar Romero, Health Ledger and Jack Nicholson, the Joker is one of Batman’s most feared enemies. The Batmen costumes which the Joker wears is largely purple and his face is covered with white paint. By also purchasing a pack of cards and a plastic knife, someone can look just like the Joker.

    Robin

Batman’s sidekick, Robin has been played by various actors and his costume is instantly recognisable, in particular because of his yellow cape, red waist jacket and green underwear. Chris O’Donnell played Robin in two movies and his costume was largely black. So that a Robin costume looks comical, choose one that is just like what Burt Ward wore.

    The Penguin

The Penguin has been played by various actors. Along with Burgess Meredith in the 1960’s TV series, Danny DeVito has also been cast as the Penguin. With a top hat, a cane, black coat and a white waist jacket, an entire costume can be bought to look like one of Batman’s enemies.

    Bane

Even though Bane is muscly, a padded suit can also be purchased to look like him. A costume retailer typically has an entire Bane costume which comes with a face mask. Although a brown jacket doesn’t have to be purchased, it can be worn in order to look like Bane. Due to the popularity of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, which Bane appeared in, many people around the world now want to dress as this character because of how menacing he looks.

    The Riddler

One of the most popular Batman Costumes around, the Riddler is another of Batman’s enemies. Having appeared in the 1960’s TV series, the Riddler was also in ‘Batman Forever’ where he was played by Jim Carrey. With a green leotard which is covered in question marks, Jim Carrey also had a red wig and green glasses in the aforementioned movie. When a group of friends are each dressed as different Batman villains, the Riddler is a great costume idea.
