Fancy Dress

  • What is Fancy Dress all About?

"Fancy dress" is mainly a British term dating back to the Victorian era. Prior to that, masquerade parties were all the rage. Because party-goers were masked and costumed and therefore anonymous, they had a tendency to act in an inappropriate manner. People were a lot bolder than when dressed in their everyday clothes. To discourage this behaviour, masquerade parties fell out of fashion with the social elite. Instead, parties where costumes were required but masks weren't became fashionable. To differentiate them from the scandalous masquerade parties, they became known as parties of "fancy dress".

    Mask

Fancy dress parties became popular for private as well as public occasions. Queen Victoria was well known for her liking of fancy dress and used to throw parties of this sort quite often. If there was something to celebrate, there was a good chance it would be celebrated in costume.

Risqué or fanciful costumes were considered inappropriate and in bad taste, so party-goers would dress in costumes of historical or literary significance. Shakespeare became a popular theme as did native costumes from other countries, though some of them would be viewed as politically incorrect during this day and age. Other common costumes portrayed seasons, such as the "winter," which entailed dressing in a fashionable white dress adorned with elegant accessories such as sparkly "icicles." Peasant dresses were also fashionable as they were considered "romantic" and perhaps a bit racier than costumes that covered cleavage, arms and legs.

    Victorian

In those times, Fancy Dress parties indicated a certain moral standard. Men didn't dress as women; women didn't dress as men and body parts weren't exposed. This was, after all, polite society and such behaviour was beneath them.

These days, "Fancy Dress" is just a glorified term for a costume party and pretty much anything goes. Most fancy dress parties are to celebrate Halloween, hen and stag do's, anniversaries, birthdays, Christmas and Easter.

    Elephant

Costume parties are popular for a number of reasons. For one thing, while dressed as someone else, you get to take on another persona for that time. If you are part of a group of like-minded people dressing to a certain theme, then you get a feeling of belonging. Dressing in costume is also a chance to show of your creativity and individuality.

There are endless costumes that you can dress up in – the more imaginative the better. You can go as your favourite superhero, a monster, a war hero, historical figures (like Cleopatra), characters from books and TV, celebrities and animals.

Dressing with originality can be a conversation starter and icebreaker. It creates a lot of different and sometimes strange laughs, looking at what people have come as, what crazy thoughts people have and learn whose favourite character is.

The main thing with fancy dress is that everyone dresses up in ridiculous, funny and imaginative costumes and for everyone to enjoy themselves.

  • We Love Spiderman!

Spiderman is a fictional superhero, brought to us by Marvel Comics. He was created with super strength and agility, the ability to cling to most surfaces and shoot spider-webs. With his ‘spider-sense’, he can react to danger quickly, enabling him to combat his foes and escape sticky situations.

    maguire

Spiderman first appeared comic books in the early 1960’s, but since the 2002 movie featuring Peter Parker, the series really broke ground. We are able to identify with Toby Maguire’s Peter Parker because we see the man behind the mask and witness the hardships he faces as he learns that “with great power there must also be great responsibility”.

Since Spiderman started leaping across our screens, he has become one of the most popular and commercially successful superheroes. He is Marvel’s flagship character and company mascot, so has appeared in many forms in the media. Now that the films have been rebooted as 'The Amazing Spiderman', Andrew Garfield has taken over the role of Spiderman, which has brought a whole new angle to his story.

With these credentials, wouldn't you like to spend some time as the Man Behind the Mask?

  • Could you be a lady fancy dress superhero?

fancy dress, superhero fancy dress, superhero

As you may have noticed, there has been a lot of buzz around fancy dress superhero films for the past few years. One thing that fans have picked up on is that there are more films about male superheroes than females. That is all set to change.

Marvel Studios is developing a film that will revolve around Black Widow, the character played by Scarlett Johansson in the “Iron Man” and “The Avengers” franchises. Here’s hoping that this film will set a trend.

While there are calls for more superhero films to feature women in the title role, there are bloggers and artists out there who are experimenting with what that would look like, by photoshopping female celebrities in the male equivalent of Ironman, Thor and Captain America costumes.

But we don’t need to worry about photoshop, not when we already have a fabulous range of lady fancy dress superhero costumes, waiting for you to make your superhero debut in at the next fancy dress event.

  • 5 Victorian fancy dress costumes

The Victorian period is very popular and many TV shows have been made which revolved around it. Victorian writers are still held in high regard such as Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde and the Bronte Sisters. The outfits which people wore at the time have inspired fancy dress costumes and parties which have a Victorian theme are held every year. So our team at Character Fancy Dress have come up with five Victorian fancy dress costumes which can be worn by people of all ages:

    Street urchin

    street urchin

Similar to what Oliver Twist wore in Charles Dickens novel of the same name, a street urchin costume can be worn by both adults and children. This costume can consist of a brown cap, white shirt, brown waistcoat and darkly coloured trousers. A father and son could wear this costume together, such as at a family party.

    Flower girl

Girls of all ages sold flowers during the Victorian period and their costumes are very popular. A flower girl costume can consist of a long dress and small bonnet. If a flower girl costume is chosen, a basket can be carried which contains fake flowers. Not only can young children choose a flower girl costume but also her older siblings or mother. When a family party has a fancy dress theme, a mother and her daughter could each wear a flower girl costume.

    Chimney sweep

    chimley sweep

Chimney sweeps have appeared in many films. As well as The Water Babies and Mary Poppins, TV shows have also featured chimney sweeps. Not only can children wear a chimney sweep costume but also adults and it is very easy to recreate. With grey trousers and a waistcoat, a grey cap is also worn. To make a costume even more genuine, buy black face paint and apply it to the cheeks and forehead in order to simulate coal dust.

    Maid

    maid

In a stately home which was owned by members of the aristocracy, there were a huge number of people which tended to the occupants and also the property itself. Along with a butler, a stately home employed many maids. A retailer of Victorian fancy dress costumes normally has a maid costume. With a white pinny and cap, a maid costume looks very smart and is instantly recognisable.

    Sherlock Holmes

Although Sherlock Holmes is a fictitious character created by Arthur Conan Doyle, his costume is well-known. Robert Downey, Jr.’s portrayal of the detective wears a different costume and so too does Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC TV series. This is because Sherlock is set in the 21st century and not Victorian England. There have been many television shows, such as Jeremy Brett as the detective, where the characters dressed in apt clothing of the time. A fancy dress retailer might have an entire Sherlock Holmes costume that is just like what Arthur Conan Doyle described. With his iconic hat, pipe and brown coat, a Sherlock Holmes costume is perfect to wear. If a couple are going to a fancy dress party and want an outfit which everyone will know what it is straightaway, a husband could dress as Sherlock Holmes and his partner as Watson.
